Journey Through the Bible
DARE TO BELIEVE THAT READING THE BIBLE IS FUN
A wise friend once told me, “We need to help each other have fun reading the Bible!” For some reason, that sentence has stuck with me for years. It’s true, though, isn’t it? Sometimes, we don’t want to read the Bible. Whether it’s fear, apathy, or laziness, it’s too easy to find an excuse not to read it.
However, I’m here to tell you that it is fun to read the Bible. No, I’m not just saying that because someone else told me… I’m telling you because I have experienced it myself. When I open the Bible, I don’t see some irrelevant history book (although it does include history). Instead, when I read the Bible, I enter into a journey of discovering what this life is about, and more importantly, Who’s behind it all.
Think about it: God wants to speak to you. Yes, God. The One who holds the universe together1 and knows the beginning from the end,2 also knows how many hairs are on your head3 and why you exist.4 Don’t you want to hear what He has to say specifically to you?
Dare to believe that reading the Bible is fun.
To get you started, here are some tools that you can use. Be careful, though. This adventure might take you to places you never expected to go…
Read the Scripture and observe; underline, highlight.
Ask the 5 W’s:
- Who wrote it?
- Whom was it written to?
- When was it written?
- Where was it written?
- Why was it written?
What is the author saying? How does it fit in the whole Bible: creation, fall, redemption, restoration?
Read commentaries, look up parallel passages, compare translations; underline, highlight, and make notes.
Compare what you are reading with your life.
Make notes that apply this passage to your life, church, and world. Ask for the Holy Spirit to help you apply what you read to your life.
